Mexican Tile Floors Flooded by Hurricanes Helene & Milton Can Be Stripped and Resealed to Like New Appearance After Dried Out

UPDATED…. SEPT 27, 2024, Mexican Tile Floors to Like New Appearance AFTER FLOODING.

Mexican Tile Floors flooded by Hurricanes Helene and Milton can be stripped, cleaned and resealed to like new appearance in 20 days, after floor dried out with fans and A/C on. The flood water got under the Mexican tile, it takes time to dry out the tile and the concrete slab. Before and after photos above are from a house that was near the Myakka river in Florida when the river overflowed it’s banks. The tile floor has to totally dry out before any work can begin. Never use undiluted vinegar or any acid to clean your Mexican tile floor as the acid eats into the sealant and penetrates the tile affecting the finish. Call Vel at 941-926-7444.

MEXICAN TILE FLOOR PROBLEMS WE CAN HELP CLEANING AND SEALING.
Degraded non-slip liner adhering to glaze
DO NOT USE RUBBER PADS UNDER CARPET ON MEX TILETarry stains from conventional rug backing
Under adverse conditions, after strong flooring strippers have been used, it may sometimes be necessary to hand sand old Mexican tiles that have black/white dots from a rubber pad embedded in the tile, an oscillating hand held sander is used and does not mark the tile with any circles.
A simple sanding will take care of the problem seen above using a small oscillating sander, oscillating sanders are easy to control, you can use them to round edges, sand inside corners as well as smooth a flat or rough surface. If stain appears near the surface of sealed clay, gently try sanding away stain. Follow this step by cleaning and re-sealing with a sealer that will color enhance, see http://www.saltillotileconnection.com/care-and-maintenance/caring-for-it/

About Us restoring Mexican Tile Mexican Tile Renew  Cleans and Restores Mexican Tile, see below important facts; Saltillo tile is made of natural clay that is first shaped by hand and then dried in the sun. Saltillo tiles are then kiln fired to ensure hardness and durability. The tiles are carefully positioned in the kiln in order to create different colors. Depending on the tile position in the kiln, the resulting tiles can range in hue from pale amber to dark Terra-cotta.

Traditionally, Saltillo tiles are left unglazed, although some manufacturers sell them pre-treated or pre-sealed in order to increase their durability.Saltillo tile is not terribly strong or hard. Although it is comparable to other stone tiles (such as slate) it can chip and crack. When used as exterior tiling, it can only be used in very mild climates, as harsh weather can damage the tile.
This type of tile typically has a MOH (measure of hardness rating) between 3 and 4. Saltillo tile was introduced to Mexico by Spaniards hundreds of years ago, and the process of making the tile has remained the same since. The tile is actually named after the Mexican town of Saltillo, which produces the right clay and weather for making this popular tile.Saltillo tile has a few drawbacks.
Unsealed and untreated tile needs to be laboriously cleaned with diluted ammonia and “elbow grease”, and lots of rinsing.  Mexican Tile Renew suggests that existing Saltillo tile floors need stripping and resealing (about every 4 to 6 years), before and after cleaning to do a proper job.  Installing Saltillo tile also has to be done carefully, as the tiles are delicate.
Any chemicals spilled on the tiles can damage them, so it is crucial to keep the tiles covered with paper until the installation is complete.  It is important to wipe up spills and dirt right away, as the tiles can stain. The floor cannot be flooded because it will weaken the delicate tiles.
Only slightly damp mops can be used on the floors, and only the mildest cleansers (no harsh chemicals, no bleach or vinegar). A sealant will have to be reapplied to keep the floor in good condition. Despite these disadvantages, there are many benefits to selecting Saltillo tile for your flooring needs. Saltillo – Mexican tile is beautiful and offers design flexibility. Whether you have a modern home, a country French-style residence, or love the Mediterranean style,
Saltillo tile can make your home look great. Although the Mexican tile is a little more effort, many homeowners and decorators feel that it is well worth it for the beauty it brings to any room. Today’s sealants do make cleaning and caring for Saltillo tile easier than ever before.
The tile is inexpensive and many homeowners like the all-natural products that go into the tile-making process. At a time when we are surrounded by chemicals, it is nice to bring a natural product into the home.

CLICK ON IMAGE ABOVE TO ENLARGE PHOTOS. Saltillo tile is a type of terra-cotta tile that originates in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. Saltillo tiles are made from clay found in the Northern Mexico area. Saltillo-type tiles are now manufactured at many places in Mexico, and high-fire “Saltillo look” tiles, many from Italy, compete with the terra-cotta originals.

The red clay is formed into Mexican tiles, dried in the sun and then fired in kilns, the newly formed Mexican tile can range in color from yellow to red with many tiles having a mixture of those colors. The Saltillo-Mexican tiles are left to dry outside, they sometimes will have the footprint of a dog or a chicken, they have an uneven bumby surface, they remain cool and comfortable in the summer.

CLICK ON IMAGE ABOVE TO ENLARGE PHOTOS. Saltillo tile is highly porous, and soaks in liquid easily. Unlike most ceramic tile, there is no glaze on the top surface of the tile. It is difficult to install as it absorbs water from the thin-set mortar, grout, grease pencils, etc. Once placed, it stains and scuffs easily if not properly sealed and maintained with a quality sealant.

You should periodically test the seal by putting a few drops of water on the tile in various places. If the water is absorbed, then another coat of sealant should be applied. Other surface sealants may give the tile a shiny appearance.

If the finish becomes too worn, dirty or uneven, it can be stripped and a new coat applied. However, this option is very labor-intensive. Additionally, another coat of sealant can be used on both the Saltillo tile and grout. A tile installation professional with experience in Saltillo will charge $2.50 to $6.00 per square foot for installation, not including tearing up the old flooring and removal, depending on your locale.

Saltillo tile may be sealed with multiple coats of acrylic sealer, the film will build an even protective film and gloss that may repel water, oil, grease, and efflorescence. A quality acrylic sealant should be used as it will be easy to apply, non-yellowing and long-lasting.

Mexican tile has no glazed finish, the only protection for the clay tile is an applied sealer and Mexican tile must be stripped, cleaned and sealed at least every 8 or 9 years, it is and always will be very labor intensive.

Refinishing Mexican tile is not really a DIY project, many different products are needed to properly strip off the old sealer, grease, oil and set in stains from years ago. Mexican Tile can have occasional cracks on the surface and has a somewhat rough texture to the touch. Mexican Tile can have animal prints. Mexican Tile are not the same color. They can vary in shading with-in the same tile. Mexican Tile are prone to alkali in the clay, to minimize problems they must be properly sealed and kept sealed with a water based acrylic sealer, multiple coats are needed.
Mexican Tile Renew uses ACRYLIC SELAERS which offers high gloss protection and beauty to unglazed Mexican paver tile and other porous terra cotta surfaces with fewer coats. A blend of the latest in acrylic polymer technology has been coupled with an anti-mar agent, U.V. inhibitors and a grease and oil blocker to become the perfect solution for sealing porous tile.
